Hundreds of thousands of people come from across the world to visit Alberta yearly! Why? Well for its legendary Rocky Mountains with their uniquely turquoise and emerald green lakes, interesting wildlife and so much more. It’s a very popular place to elope with so many activities, hikes, and neat little mountain towns! 😉
So I have compiled my 5 main reasons I think you should come here to the Alberta Rocky Mountains to Elope. If you are not convinced after reading this then perhaps you need to check out a Lake Louise Elopement (pictured above) or perhaps a Heli Elopement (which was featured in Feb 2023 on Wandering Weddings), will inspire you more. 😉
#1: THE MOUNTAINS ARE EPIC!
Here in Alberta, we have the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the famous National Parks of Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park, and Waterton National Park. Although there are taller mountains in the Colorado Rockies to the south, Alberta’s northern section of the Rockies is more jagged and has a more striking, awe-inspiring appearance due to the fact that they have contained far more glaciers and more severe weather to shape them in that harsh environment. It is also due to these glaciers that Alberta has the turquoise rivers and lakes this landscape is so famous for; so all in all you get the most breathtaking views here in Alberta than you would further south in this incredible mountain range.
There are so many location choices depending on the level of adventure and effort you want to exert on your elopement day, and you just have to decide what backdrop you want and then nail down the perfect location for stunning views!
#2: MOUNTAIN TOWNS
Alberta is home to several adorable, fun little mountain towns with amazing food, craft breweries, distilleries, shops, and more. They are all nestled in the valleys between majestic mountains and there is so much to do. Enjoy Hotels and AirBnbs with rooftop hot tubs or the famous Banff Hot Springs, where you can soak with your partner surrounded by towering, breathtaking peaks and partake in a romantic couples massage! Then wander through town visiting the shops and eating some of the best food this province has to offer; my hubby and I have a personal favorite in Banff called The Grizzly House, which is a fondue restaurant with a very cool vibe, we have been going there for 20+ years and that’s where we went the day we got engaged even (18 years ago)! There are also craft breweries so if you are like my husband and I you won’t get bored sipping on some incredible beer! ;
Check out Banff, Canmore, Jasper, Waterton, Lake Louise Village, Rocky Mountain House, Nordegg, Waterton, to name a few 😉
#3: THE TURQUOISE LAKES & RIVERS
You won’t find lakes and rivers quite like those you find here in Alberta! Canada, and Alberta in particular, are famous worldwide for the rich, vibrant turquoise lakes and rivers flowing all through these Northern Rockies. The glaciers melt and as they flow into rivers and eventually lakes they carry silt and the minerals in the rock formations of Alberta’s Rockies turn the water into a beautiful shade of greeny-blue that leaves you in awe! So if nothing else, you have to check out lakes such as Abraham Lake, Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Maligne Lake and more; then I am sure you will want to elope here!
#4: SO MUCH TO DO….
Alberta has so many activities no matter the season that you honestly can’t get bored here or run out of activities to add to your day. From horseback riding ranches to hiking hundreds of trails (of all levels), to paddle-boarding, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, gondola rides, helicopter rides (and eloping on the peak of a mountain with no hiking), to dogsledding, grizzly bear tours, hot springs, wolf sanctuary, white water rafting, skydiving, ziplining and so much more.
#5: HOSPITALITY
Canadians are known around the world for being so courteous and it’s not a lie. We welcome tourists and traveling couples with open arms. You will find yourself fitting right in here and the hospitality of every vendor you encounter, from hotel staff/airbnb owners, to your elopement photographer (hopefully me!), to tour guides and other vendors you hire will be unmatched!!
