So you’ve decided to have your engagement photos taken amidst the STUNNING landscapes in Canada? I’m SO here for it! I love a good outdoor engagement photoshoot! Going on adventures and hikes together with my couples?! Yes, please!
Alberta is, without a doubt, one of the most BEAUTIFUL places on this planet! Think majestic mountains, serene lakes, and vast fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. But before you head out for your outdoor engagement photoshoot, here are some tips to ensure it’s the best experience for you and your partner!
Dress for the Weather and the Vibes
Coming up with your outdoor engagement photo outfits can feel like a hassle because I know you want to look and feel your best for any photo shoot. When picking your outfits, I recommend clothing that allows movement, is comfortable, and also feels like YOU. You don’t want to wear something that doesn’t feel or look like you just for the photos. I am always happy to discuss outfit choices with my clients to ensure they feel great and look great in the photos!
The weather in Alberta can be unpredictable, so you want to check the forecast before your session and bring layers, just in case anyway. 😊
Wear Proper Footwear
Navigating Alberta’s diverse terrains demands the proper footwear. Those stilettos? Gorgeous, but not for hiking! Opt for sturdy boots or comfy sneakers that allow you to move around more comfortably (and safely!). But if you’re set on wearing heels, pack them with you, and you can change into them later!

To make your session even more meaningful and authentic to you, you could visit your favorite hiking trails or the spots you often visit together! We can also brainstorm locations together! Banff National Park is the crown jewel of the Rockies! You can capture your love amidst turquoise lakes like Peyto Lake, Lake Louise, and Moraine Lake. Want a mountain backdrop? The views from Banff Gondola at Sulphur Mountain are EVERYTHING and more!
Jasper National Park
Jasper National Park is a quieter yet equally stunning alternative to Banff! With serene lakes, stunning waterfalls, and beautiful trails, glaciers, and peaks, there are many jaw-dropping backdrop options for your outdoor engagement photoshoot!
Badlands of Drumheller
Are you seeking something more unique? The dramatic landscapes of the Drumheller Badlands are PERFECT! The Hoodoos (those tall, thin spires of rock) provide a unique, rugged backdrop for your photos. You can visit the Hoodoo trail just outside Drumheller for spectacular photo opportunities!

Lake Minnewanka
A short drive from Banff, Lake Minnewanka is a stunning glacial lake with a pristine setting with mountains framing every shot! It’s especially stunning during sunset and sunrise hours, but I really always rave about that time of the day!
Stay Hydrated and Bring Snacks
Outdoor engagement photoshoots are so much fun, but they can also be a tad exhausting. Keep a bottle of water handy and grab some energy-boosting snacks with you. If you grab a blanket and a picnic basket, I’m all for capturing dreamy picnic engagement photos!!
Embrace the Unexpected
Be prepared for everything when you choose to roam Alberta’s beautiful wilds! Weather is mostly unpredictable in the mountains, especially the Alberta Rockies, where we sometimes experience all four seasons of temperatures and weather in one single day! So grab your layers, put on your boots, and be prepared to go with the flow!
