How to Plan a Helicopter Elopement

As a Canadian and destination elopement photographer, I’ve had the privilege to capture love stories in the most unique settings. And there’s nothing quite like a helicopter elopement to elevate those special, intimate moments to new heights – quite literally!

There’s a lot of planning and logistics involved when it comes to helicopter elopements, but it’s totally my jam! I’m armed with knowledge so I can help plan my clients’ heli elopements and provide them with everything they need to know!

What is a Helicopter Elopement?

You could say that a helicopter elopement is basically an elopement day that includes a helicopter ride. However, it’s also so much more than that! Imagine soaring above some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, exchanging your vows in intimate seclusion, and getting to capture really one-of-a-kind elopement photos!

The Canadian Rockies

I may be biased since the Rockies is one of my favorite places in the whole world, but it truly is such a beautiful location for your helicopter elopement. The Canadian Rockies offer spectacular, rugged landscapes that are nothing short of a dream for adventurous lovers.

Crystal-clear lakes, jagged mountain peaks, and vast glaciers make for the perfect backdrop for a stunning helicopter elopement!

Alaska

Known for its expansive, untouched wilderness, Alaska offers a unique and dramatic setting for a helicopter elopement. You can tie the knot amidst the majestic glaciers or towering mountain peaks – making for unique elopement backdrops for your ceremony and photos!

Iceland

Renowned for its stark, otherworldly beauty, Iceland presents opportunities for the most unique elopement photos. The black sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, and vivid green valleys will add a captivating edge to your elopement day.

If you’re seeking a tropical paradise, Hawaii’s lush mountains, sparkling waters, and sandy beaches, provide a vibrant, romantic setting. 

Imagine landing on top of a mountain in Hawaii and saying your vows with the panoramic beauty of the Pacific as your backdrop.

Best Time of Year to Plan a Helicopter Elopement

Choosing the right time for your helicopter elopement depends largely on your chosen destination.

As a rule of thumb, seasons with moderate weather are typically the best. For the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, the summer months (June through August) offer longer days and milder temperatures.

Iceland is a magical location for all seasons, except for Winter, when the weather can really be harsh and unpredictable. Hawaii is great throughout the year, however, between October and January, you might experience more frequent rains.

Sedona is a beautiful place to elope at any time of the year, but there are certain seasons that may be more suitable depending on your wants and needs! For example, Summer is going to be HOT, but it’s a great time if you’re looking to have a more secluded and private experience since it is less crowded. Planning a Helicopter Elopement

You may have an idea of the when and where, but there are a few more things to consider as you plan a helicopter elopement.

Hire an Experienced Elopement Photographer

Your elopement day is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it’s so important to hire a professional elopement photographer to capture your day beautifully, as well as help you navigate the planning process!

An expert elopement photographer (hi, it’s me!) will help advise you on the location(s) you are interested in, will guide you on the best season to elope in that location(s), and guide you through all of the logistics of designing your dream helicopter elopement!

Choose a Reputable Helicopter Service

Safety should be your top priority, so it’s important to do your research and choose a reputable helicopter service with an excellent safety record and experienced pilots.

For the Canadian Rockies, I highly recommend Rockies Heli Canada services.

Dress Appropriately

Be prepared for the weather and this applies to all locations! The Canadian Rockies can be very unpredictable in any season because the extreme weather can come at you out of nowhere.

But overall, it’s great to wear layers or have layers with you, to be prepared for winds, rain, or snow. Something I learned the hard way!

Check Local Regulations

Each location will have its own set of regulations for helicopter flights, and ceremonies to make your union legal. Make sure you’re informed and compliant! This is something I’d absolutely help you with as a part of my elopement packages!

Have a Plan B

Weather can be unpredictable, and helicopter services may be canceled due to safety concerns. Having a backup plan ensures your day remains special, regardless of unforeseen circumstances.

I always have backup options ready for my couples, because Mother Nature can have her own plans. 😉
