Do you want a unique and dreamy winter elopement in the gorgeous Alberta? Well, you’re in the right place! Winter elopement is nothing short of a fairytale, and Alberta, with its enchanting landscapes and snowfall, makes the experience unforgettable!
Winter elopements require a bit more planning due to unpredictable weather, road closures, and a bit more complicated logistics due to all the snow. So in this blog, I wanted to dive deeper into how to plan a winter elopement in Alberta!
First of all, why should you consider eloping in winter? Winter offers backdrops like no other season. Imagine breathtaking landscapes, a cozy cabin, the excitement of adventure, and romance that’s just UNMATCHED that comes with a world covered in snow.
It’s also a less busy time for vendors and locations, so you get the benefit of your choice in dates. Some venues and locations often offer off-season pricing too so that you may save money on that and SPLURGE on your dream photographer (me! *wink wink*).
Alberta is FULL of gorgeous spots, but you need to consider accessibility! Think about seasonal road and trail closures, and always have a backup plan! As an experienced Alberta elopement photographer, I’ll guide you through all those logistics to ensure your day is smooth and stress-free.
The Rockies are a gorgeous location option for your winter elopement! The snow adds an EXTRA layer of beauty to the already epic landscapes of peaks, valleys, and frozen alpine lakes! Even though the higher-elevation roads may be closed, the lower-elevation trails are open for snowshoeing adventures!
Dressing appropriately is CRUCIAL for a winter elopement! You want to stay as warm and dry as possible. So think LAYERS, thermal underwear, winter boots, and, of course, a BEAUTIFUL, warm wedding outfit! Look at warmer, heavier fabrics, like velvet, and bring a shawl, jacket, or a coat to stay toasty.
And don’t forget about the accessories! A cute beanie or a pair of hand warmers or mittens can be a fun and practical addition!
Safety FIRST! Understand the weather conditions and ALWAYS be prepared for the cold! Having a backup location and even a backup date is ESSENTIAL in case of snowstorms or severe temperatures. And, of course, equip your vehicle with winter tires.
I always have backup plans ready to go for my elopement clients! 😉
Staying warm and toasty is important! Here are a couple of tips to ensure you’re comfortable during your magical winter elopement!
Bring a Thermos with Hot Drinks! Whether it’s coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, having a warm drink will keep the cold at bay and add a cozy touch to your adventure!
*yes, we could pop a bottle of bubbly, but alcohol DOESN’T actually keep you warm!
Stay Nourished and Hydrated! It’s easy to overlook, but staying well-fed and hydrated is crucial, especially in the cold. So pack some snacks and water!
Bring Layers & Handwarmers! This is an obvious one. 😉
Looking for fun ways to celebrate your winter elopement? Here are a few that will make your day extra special!
Go Snowshoeing! Especially enjoyable on hikes, it’s a fun way to explore and experience the snowy landscapes!
Hot Chocolate by the Fire! Make some delicious hot chocolate and snuggle up with your partner by the fire! It’s all about those cozy and sweet moments!
Have a Snowball Fight! Not only is this going to be fun, but it’s also a super cute photo op for candid elopement photos!
Build a Snowman Together! It’s fun and another sweet addition to your winter elopement photos!
Make Snow Angels! If you’re up for it and properly dressed (and can run to a cozy warm-up!) – this is such an adorable idea!
